Silver Mask

The Silver Mask of the North American Houses.

Silver Masks are a branch of The Order of St. George who don the color silver and are considered specialist monster hunters. Dedicating themselves to studying all kinds of specific monsters that arise from folklore, they keep their focus only on creatures with established rules and predictable behaviors. While the number of them varies depending on parts of the world, all houses traditionally have at least two, a master and an apprentice, as is tradition.

Description[]

Silver Masks are the specialist hunters of the Order of St. George. They must study years of folklore in all its facets to determine from which belief structure their target was manifested. In ancient times, the Silver Masks were a larger aspect of the Order, as larger percentages of the population believed in specific types of monsters: vampires, werewolves, changelings, and all manner of dark creatures. As these monsters were supplanted by rawer, amorphous monsters, formed by baser fears, the Silver Masks' work became less plentiful, and fewer hunters made the decision to rise up to this position. As it stands, each House must have at least two Silver Masks – a master an an apprentice – to keep the tradition alive.

Silver Masks are hunters who are expected to have a high knowledge of the different kinds of monsters, be able to classify and analyze them, and know how to kill them in the most quick and efficient manner. This branch used to be larger in older times, when more civilians believed in specific aspects of folklore. With society at large becoming more skeptical in modern times, there was less need for hunters who needed a thorough understanding of what they were facing, as most monsters tended to form in other ways.[1] However, the position is still seen as important and high-ranking, as Silver Masks are often seen with their Dragons[2] and separate themselves from the other Hunters. In fact, other Hunters often find them eerie or disturbing, with many of their practices being kept in the dark.[3]

Each House must have at least two Silver Masks in order to keep with tradition. This usually means that each House has one master and one apprentice.[1]

Known Silver Masks[]

House of Slaughter[]

As of 2021[4], the two current Silver Masks of the House of Slaughter have been seen repeatedly, though they are currently unnamed. The Master is a tall, aging black man, with his apprentice being a light-skinned woman who wears her thick black hair in pigtails. So far, they have been completely silent, tend to unnerve the other members of their house,[5] and accompany The Old Dragon as guards.[2]

Following the defeat of Hermes and Gerde Slaughter, a Scarlet and White Mask were transferred to the Silver program:[6]
